This is a captivating story of the lives of several women in England whose paths cross at different times of their lives. The story concentrates on two eras, 1867 and 1912.

In 1876, we find two young girls selling posies of violets and watercress. We meet them at first as they learn to sell with their mother. This is the only means of support, and most of the time their bellies are empty, they are barefoot, and sleep outside if they do not sell enough to please their mean, abusive father. As time goes on, both their mother and father die, and, now the two sisters, orphans, Flora and Rosie Flynn sell their posies in Coventry Garden. One day the sisters become separated, and their lives change forever.
