Not your conventional "self-help" book.....
I can't stand so-called "self-help" books, especially the ones that pretend to have a magic formula for happiness, success, money, true love, or what have you. Normally I wouldn't go near one that had a title like this--was the author trying to tell us how to live "virtuously" and find the right path to "search for meaning"? But a review in the Wall Street Journal intrigued me, so I read it. And I was hooked.
For this is not a flashy fraud like, say, "The Secret". As the subtitle indicates, it is a "meditation". The book consists of several dozen very short essays on virtues and vices, using the lists provided Benjamin Franklin and Pope Gregory respectively as starting points. It is a beautifully written collection expressing her thoughts on them based on her life experiences and observations of people, mostly in the American West, where she was born and raised.
