Unfortunately the author holds back critical personal information that may prove essential to understanding his inner motivations. This is understandable, as the author likely set out to achieve some legacy building as he nears the end of his athletic career, but it's unfortunate because this story had the potential to transcend the sports biography genre in the same way that older autobiographers Eric Clapton, Keith Richards, Gregg Allman and the late Johnny Winters transcended the Rock bio genre.
Howard proves an excellent subject. The early chapters are particularly engrossing as the author offers his unique glimpse into the social fabric of suburban New Jersey and his interactions with kids and families from all walks of life. His own extended family story...
